Many ageing carers with long term caring responsibilities are concerned about their capacity to continue caring and what will happen to their son or daughter when they can no longer be the primary carer.

This paper responds to funding provided in the 2004–05 Federal Budget for respite care for ageing carers. It analyses the statistical data and best practice literature on supporting ageing carers and recommends the adoption of an Australia wide regional respite and succession support service model.
